In recent decades cupping therapy has increased in popularity, but cupping is rooted in ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. It is an alternative form of medicine used to heal and alleviate many health conditions.
Cupping therapy relieves pain, enhances blood flow, promotes relaxation, and improves inflammation. However, it is essential to ensure your cupping therapy treatment is administered by a professional. At Body Mind Wellness Acupuncture, our doctors have the expertise and skill to help you successfully feel your best. As a team, our goal is to help you feel better, heal and balance the body and soul, look your best and laugh again.
What is Cupping Therapy?
It is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist places specialized cups on specific areas of your skin for a few minutes to create suction. The suction and negative pressure provided by cupping loosen muscles and encourage blood flow, lessening swelling or tension in soft tissue.
Cupping is also highly detoxifying. While your lymphatic system naturally filters toxins to remove them from your body, fat-soluble toxins from your diet, environment, and chemical additives stay trapped in the tissue. Cupping therapy improves the body’s natural detoxification process by manually manipulating the soft tissue so toxins can be moved from your fat cells into your lymphatic cleansing system.
What Happens During a Cupping Therapy Session?
During your cupping therapy session, your therapist will put a flammable substance, such as alcohol, herbs, or paper, in a cup and set it on fire. The cup is placed upside down on your skin as the fire extinguishes. As the air inside cools, it creates a vacuum, causing your skin to rise and turn red as your blood vessels expand. The cup is left in place for approximately three minutes.
There are many styles of cups, such as bamboo, glass, ceramic, and silicone. During your first few sessions, your therapist will use three to five cups. As your body becomes more accustomed to the treatment, they may increase the number of cups to seven.
Who Benefits from Cupping Therapy?
Almost everyone can benefit from cupping therapy. It is a versatile treatment tailored to treat your condition, whether you need deep tissue massage or lymphatic drainage.
Cupping can effectively alleviate pain and symptoms that accompany conditions such as:
- Arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis
- Migraines and headaches
- Anxiety and depression
- Gastrointestinal disorders, like IBS
- Muscle tension or fatigue
- Back, neck, shoulder, and knee pain
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Breathing problems, such as asthma
Cupping therapy helps removes toxins within the body. Even if you adhere to a healthy diet and lifestyle, you still build up toxins in your body that can be alleviated by cupping. It removes these impurities and catalyzes your body’s natural detoxification process, helping regulate your digestive and nervous systems. Cupping therapy is an element of a comprehensive treatment plan that may include acupuncture and gua sha.
The increase in blood flow encouraged by cupping can promote healing and speed up the recovery process. Therefore, cupping will benefit those who are:
- Recovering from an injury
- Working in an intense job
- Physically active in the gym or with sports
- Living an active lifestyle
Are There Risks to Cupping Therapy?
There are little to no risks of cupping. However, it presents some risk factors for patients currently taking blood thinners, or have issues with clotting, bleeding, or open wounds. Also, it is not suggested for cancer patients.
